Steve Carson to head NI Productions

Steve Carson

Steve Carson is to be the next head of BBC Northern Ireland Productions.

The RTÉ Television man succeeds Ailsa Orr, who is now leading the tv innovation unit in London.

Carson, who is currently RTÉ's factual group chief editorial advisor and director, will be responsible for Northern Ireland's network and local programmes.

Belfast-born Carson started his career at the BBC where he cut his teeth on current affairs titles such as Newsnight, Spotlight and Panorama.

He later established Irish indie, Mint Productions, with documentaries Haughey and Bertie, as well as BBC NI local audience discussion programme Let's Talk, among its credits.

He joined RTE Television as director of programmes in 2009, before being appointed to his current role this year.

'I am delighted that someone of Steve's calibre and experience is joining us and at such an important time,' said Peter Johnston, director, BBC Northern Ireland.

'Our local programmes are making a significant impact with audiences here; we are increasing our content supply to the BBC's networks and harnessing the benefits and opportunities of digital technology.'

Carson is expected to take up his new post before the end of the year.
