Claire Savage has been voted the year's top broadcast journalist in Northern Ireland by CIPR NI Media Awards judges.

They described the BBC Belfast BJ - a previous recipient of three other CIPR titles - as 'a polished reporter who always finds the right connections'.

Savage was honoured for her work throughout the year - and in particular for three television reports for BBC Newsline.

These saw her tell the story, as the only reporter with a crew on the ground, of the 2012 riot that broke out after one of Belfast's loyalist flag protests; cover the funeral of Corporal Channing Day, Northern Ireland's first female soldier killed in Afghanistan; and report from the County Down farm on the night that three members of the same family - including promising Ulster rugby star Nevin Spence - died in a slurry accident.

Nolan success

Stephen Nolan, who has presented a morning show on Radio Ulster since 2003, was named presenter of the year at the awards, which are now in their 20th year.

His producer Vinny Hurrell - also an occasional presenter - was highly commended for newcomer of the year.

And BBC Northern Ireland's documentary 14 Days - looking at the two weeks in March 1988 when a sequence of traumatic events shook Northern Ireland to its core - was highly commended in the broadcast programme category.

Peter Johnston, BBC Northern Ireland director, said: 'The CIPR Awards celebrate the success of journalists and broadcasters who live and work in Northern Ireland. I am delighted that Stephen and Claire have won in their categories and that Vinny has also been recognised for the quality of his work.'
