BBC radio secures live Ashes coverage for 2013-14

BBC radio will broadcast exclusive live commentary of the Ashes tournament in Australia when it runs between November and January.

The corporation already has radio rights to the next Ashes games, which will take place in England between July 10 and August 25.

BBC Sport director Barbara Slater said "there's no one better to deliver it to audiences than the esteemed Test Match Special team".

TMS will also be providing full coverage of this summer's international fixtures on Radio 4 LW and 5 live sports extra.

Spirit of Cricket awards

  • The BBC and Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) have launched two awards in the memory of former TMS commentator Christopher Martin-Jenkins, who died on New Year's Day.
  • The Elite Award will be presented to a professional cricketer who has made the biggest contribution to the Spirit of Cricket in the 2013 English cricket season.
  • The Youth Award will recognise an under-16 junior cricketer or team who have best demonstrated the Spirit of Cricket in action.
  • Application forms will be available later this summer on the Lord's and BBC websites.

The BBC's online streaming of the summer Ashes will be available worldwide although the winter series will be restricted to UK listeners.

Radio 5 live's coverage of the summer tournament will include:

  • Women's Ashes coverage including Claire Taylor, the only woman to be named one of Wisden's 5 Cricketers of the Year
  • A series of Ashes Roadshows presented by former cricketer Andrew Flintoff
  • He will also host an Ashes Legends series with presenter Mark Chapman
  • Test Match Special broadcasters Jonathan Agnew and Henry Blofeld will celebrate archive cricket commentary in Sounds of the Summer
  • Former Australian cricketer Glenn McGrath will also join the TMS team
  • A weekly cricket show with former cricketers Michael Vaughan and Phil Tufnell
  • Radio 1 DJ Greg James will resume his irreverent Not Just Cricket shows on 5 live for Saturday mornings

The BBC cricket website and local radio are also broadcasting live commentary of every county match this summer, and there is increased coverage on 5 live sports extra.
