BBC Two controller Janice Hadlow has also taken temporary charge of BBC Four.

The move follows the announcement this week that Richard Klein, controller of BBC Four since 2008, has left the BBC to become ITV's director of factual.

Hadlow, who was Klein's predecessor at BBC Four, will be supported in her dual role by channel executive Adam Barker and schedulers Don Cameron and Owen Courtney.

A former head of specialist factual at Channel 4, Hadlow started her career as a BBC production trainee in 1986.

Subsequent roles at the corporation included Woman's Hour producer, The Late Show editor and joint head of history.

At BBC Two she has presided over programmes including Welcome to Lagos, Wonders of the Solar System, Lambing Live, Stargazing Live, Miranda, Rev, Crimson Petal and The White and The Hour.
