England defeat draws 23m viewers

A peak audience of 23.2 million viewers (77.4% share) watched England get knocked out of Euro 2012 on BBC One.

On average, 17.4m (62.3%) tuned into coverage of Sunday's quarter-final match in Kiev, making it the most-watched event on tv so far this year.

The match was shown exclusively on the BBC, with the presentation team at the Olympic Stadium venue in Ukraine - after the group stages were hosted from the BBC Sport studios in Salford because it was "more economical".

The peak audience figure beat last year's royal wedding peak of 19.9m, although the BBC coverage of that event reached 34.7m overall.

Sunday's match drew a higher average audience than any game in the 2010 World Cup, with only the Portugal v England quarter-final in Euro 2004 drawing a bigger average at 20.7m.

England exited Euro 2012 after they were beaten 4-2 by Italy in a penalty shoot-out following a goalless draw.

The average audiences for England's previous matches in Euro 2012 were 16.1m (against Ukraine on ITV1); 14.1m (against Sweden on BBC One); and 9m (against France on ITV1).
