Sir Mervyn King to give Today lecture

Sir Mervyn King Sir Mervyn King will answer listeners' questions

Sir Mervyn King will deliver the 2012 BBC Today Programme Lecture on May 2.

From his position as Governor of the Bank of England, he will reflect on the issues facing the global economy before an invited audience of 300 Today listeners, who will also have the opportunity to ask questions.

The lecture, which will be hosted by Today presenter Evan Davis, will be broadcast in full on Radio 4. Davis will also interview Sir Mervyn on the next day's programme.

Today editor Ceri Thomas considers Sir Mervyn's participation something of a coup. 'He's been at the centre of public life in this country through some of the most difficult economic times we've ever known. This is a great opportunity to hear his views and put directly to him some of our listeners' concerns.'

The annual lecture was launched last year, when Bob Diamond, chief executive of Barclays, warned of 'social unrest' unless the UK could generate more growth and jobs.

Details of how to apply for tickets to the event will be published on the Today website closer to the time.
