Growing Knowledge was a joint BBC-British Library project on social media and research. The websites are at BBC Online and the British Library. Growing Knowledge was also an exhibition at the British Library where you could carry out research using innovative technologies at specially designed multimedia workstations.
What is social media?
Social media refers to the websites individuals use to communicate and interact across the internet. Interactions include updating social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace, posting or commenting on a blog or microblog, such as Twitter or Tumblr, or sharing images or video on YouTube or Flickr.
Why is it relevant to research?
Researchers use social media to discuss ideas and to find and share information, therefore the BBC and the British Library want to find out if this is influencing the way research is carried out.
