FRANCIS BACON AT THE BBC | Celebrating the life and work of a great British artist
In October 1971 the Grand Palais hosted the first major retrospective of Bacon's paintings. In this interview, given to mark the occasion, the painter talks candidly about his art and some of the recurring themes and influences that inform his work.
The exhibition was marred by the suicide of George Dyer, Bacon's former partner, in his Paris hotel room just two days before the opening. Dyer featured repeatedly in Bacon's paintings throughout the 1960s. The two allegedly met while Dyer was burgling Bacon's flat.
