David Attenborough: Zoo Quest for a Dragon | Seeking the Komodo dragon in Indonesia
Document Type | Internal Memo
13 September 1956
In a more formal memo sent to Leonard Miall on his return to London, David Attenborough itemises the problems his team faced when they first arrived in Indonesia to film their search for the Komodo dragon and suggests ways in which these difficulties might have been avoided.
David Attenborough originally wished to finish the trip on the Aru Islands to record footage of the exquisite birds of paradise that he had first seen pictured in a book by Alfred Russel Wallace (Charles Darwin's lesser-known contemporary). However, this plan was prevented by the Indonesian authorities and, except for a glimpse of a related species the following year, Attenborough did not fulfil his wish until some 40 years later, when he filmed 'The Life of Birds' in 1997.
