David Attenborough: Zoo Quest for a Dragon | Seeking the Komodo dragon in Indonesia
Document Type | Letter
09 August 1956
David Attenborough updates BBC Head of Department Leonard Miall on his progress after seven weeks, 6,000 feet of film and various encounters with exotic animals and obstructive bureaucrats.
A year earlier, in 1955, Leonard Miall had decided that David Attenborough should step in to replace presenter Jack Lester, who was unwell following a 'Zoo Quest' expedition. Until then, Attenborough had remained behind the camera as a producer, at least partly because, as the naturalist revealed in his autobiography, Miall's predecessor Mary Adams had decided that his teeth were 'too big'.
