David Attenborough: Zoo Quest for a Dragon | Seeking the Komodo dragon in Indonesia
Document Type | Letter
11 September 1956
David Attenborough thanks Mr Aikin-Sneath for starting to organise an air-sea rescue attempt when he and cameraman Charles Lagus failed to return to Surabaya at the appointed time.
David Attenborough and Charles Lagus were four days late returning from Komodo to Surabaya on Java, hence the fears for their safety. A lack of flights meant they had to spend three nights waiting on a concrete airstrip on Sumbawa, one of the southern islands, for an aeroplane that might be going in their direction.
