Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English! Today we talk about a controversy in the UK over whether children should kiss their fathers goodnight. Germaine Greer, a famous feminist writer with controversial views claimed that fathers might be encouraging their young daughters to flirt with men later in life. During the BBC discussion programme Question Time, Germaine raised this topic, saying that maybe ‘kissing Daddy goodnight’ is causing little girls to flirt with men. But Dr Pat Spungin, a child psychologist, disagrees entirely with Germain Greer’s comments. She said that she ‘loathes’ the suggestion that this type of intimacy between a father and his daughter should be made to seem suspicious. Reacting to the comments made by Germaine Greer, Dr Spungin said she thinks that daughters and fathers having a warm, physical, cuddling, loving relationship is a positive thing for everybody involved. However this discussion comes at a time when people are debating the issue of the sexualisation of young children and if some of the clothes sold to young girls are appropriate for their age.
