Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English! Can Formula One become more environmentally friendly? That is what we are talking about today.
Formula One organisers say they are going to reduce their carbon emissions by 15% in the next three years.
BBC reporter Jonny Hogg says that a measurement of carbon emissions was carried out looking at every aspect of the sport, from the race weekend to moving from country to country during the season.
Teams buying in equipment is the largest contributor to carbon emissions. Moving the race around the World was another factor, as was electricity usage, much of it to power wind tunnels to carry out aerodynamic testing.
The analysis revealed also that in spite of the the cars burning around 160 litres of fuel during each Grand Prix, racing and testing them counts for less than 1% of emissions. But rules may be changed by 2013, restricting the amount of fuel that each team can use. These chages could force the development of more efficient race engines.
Another way to improve efficiency might be changing the race calendar so that teams have shorter distances to travel. These changes are coming because of pressure from sponsors, who are keen to be associated with a "greener" product.
There are hopes that the sport has become an attractive testing ground for more efficient technologies and that means fewer carbon emissions.
