MARGARET THATCHER

Margaret (Hilda) Thatcher , Baroness 1925 --
Born in Grantham, Lincolnshire, England, UK.
British stateswoman and prime minister (1979--90).

Margaret Thatcher's father owned a grocer's shop, and she didn't go straight into politics. First she studied chemistry at Oxford, and then law. It wasn't until 1959, when she was married with two young children that she was elected to serve as a member of the British parliament representing the right wing Conservative Party.

Margaret Thatcher:
"Let me give you my vision: A man's right to work as he will, to spend what he earns, to own property, to have the state as servant and not as master - these are the British inheritance. They are the essence of a free economy... and on that freedom all our other freedoms depend."
