Pat Marsh's 1969 Moon Landing Newspaper

I bought this copy of the Evening Standard as a boy in 1969.

I remember our family watching the moon landing on the huge old black and white Rediffusion TV that stood in the corner, with an air of disbelief. I recall standing alone in the back garden that night, squinting for all I was worth at the moon, with my plastic binoculars in the forlorn hope that I might be able to see the guys wandering around up there?I was 11.

The next day I made a point of buying a copy of the Evening Standard, thinking that in years to come, I would be able to show it to my children - I was convinced that colour pictures, which hadn't been printed in a newspaper before, would make it a collectors item.

I later learnt that the paper had created a 'mock-up' of the main image in advance, as real pictures from the moon weren't available. Fast equipment to send photographic images through space had not yet been invented. Although my copy has got a bit dog-eared down the years, just flicking through the pages today, takes me instantly back to my childhood and the proud feeling that I was around when history was being made?along with millions of others!
