Commanded the Scarborough on the First Fleet to Australia in 1788. He went on to China and on the way discovered and named the Gilbert and Marshall Islands. The painting was done by a native artist in Canton in 1788.At this time he was employed by the East India Company. In the war with France, in beating off a French Privateer of greatly superior strength in men & guns he was twice wounded, one ball passing through his body, & another striking his watch , glanced off & passed through his thigh. He did write his memoirs which we have been unable to locate. He was born 15th February 1748 and died in 1819. These notes were taken from an article that came with the painting written by George Gisby in 1901 a grandson of John Marshall. It reminds me of all the trials and tribulations that the early explorers went through in the early days. I would like to trace his Journals so that I could find out more about my ancestor.
