Harry dennis worked in his fathers greengrocers shop and played football for the Early Closing League, which I believe was a fore-runner of the football league. They played when the shops were closed for half a day, wednesday, I believe. In the season 1912-13 Harrys team won the cup and he was awarded a gold medal. When he left Barnsley, to serve in the great war, he left the medal, his most treasured posession, with his sweetheart, Alice Scholey. Sadly, Harry was killed, along with the other Barnsley pals. Alice wore the medal for the rest of her life, and remained true to her sweetheart and died a spinster aged 95.The great war created many widdows and left many sad young ladies in Barnsley as well as many other places.
