Postal Worker Brass Button

This item is a small metal disc embossed with the image of an old fashioned postman leaping over a sail ship and a lighthouse. To tell the truth, I'm not entirely sure what this item is. I dug it up in the garden of my house as a child in the 1980s. If it is contemporary with the scene it depicts, then I'd hazard a guess that it's from the mid 1800s to early 1900s. For such a small item (the same circumference as a one pound coin) it does say a lot about a certain period in communication, travel and engineering/architecture.
