The electric guitar is one of the iconic objects of the 20th century. It made, and still makes, sounds which have the power to fix our personal and collective memories in a specific time and place - though we didn't fully realise it at the time, it helped form, and it still permeates, the modern world in so many ways. It gave, and still gives, people a means to 'protest against' or 'identify with'. Successive generations have used it to create a voice distinct from those who've gone before - or to emulate those who've gone before. Universally recognised around the world, constantly reinvented, yet always the same. The electric guitar is simultaneously a symbol of democratisation, and of cultural colonialism; it's mass-produced by the thousand, and inspires individual examples of high craftsmanship; it's the foundation for world-spanning entertainment empires, and a thing you can play for your own amusement.
