This is a Sunday School Prize presented to my grandma's childhood sweetheart, John Whitley in 1878, at the Primitive Methodist Sunday School, Cradley Heath. The title is 'Life and Travel in Tartary, Thibet and China'. He and my grandma intended to marry. The book may have given John a taste for adventure because he sailed to Australia to set up a home for them but after one letter from Sydney no more was heard of him. My gran became a headmistress of a Board School and finally married aged 40.
I chose this book because it tells something about the importance of Sunday Schools, of long engagements, and that a young boy in the Midlands in the heart of the Industrial Revolution, felt able to emigrate to Australia to better himself - although it's a sad, and an intriguing tale!
