Ukiyoe print

Contributed by Tom

This is an Ukiyoe print that I bought when I lived in Japan. It shows a Samurai warrior from the civil war period.

Based on the photograph, it appears to be a print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, from the series Taiheiki eiyuden (Heroes of the Taiheiki), published in 1848-50. The subject is Hida Magobei Masatoshi (the historical Kida Magobei) using his spear to block a thrown sword. The British Museum has another impression, in the Arthur R. Miller Collection: 2008,3037.05610
