Shintomiza Kabuki playbill 1899

This Kabuki poster, which I own, advertises a show run which included a memorial performance of Karukaya Doshin Tsukushi no Iezuto, The Priest Karukaya, written by Namiki Sosuke, which was staged at the Shintomiza the month after the tragic death in August 1899 of Suketakaya Kodenji I at the age of 16, an extremely promising young Kabuki actor, and starred his younger brothers Sawamura Sonosuke in the role of Monk Karukaya and Sawamura Chonosuke (later Sawamura Chojuro VII) in the role of the monk's son Ishidomaru
