This German letter balance came to Britain as a result of one of 20th century Europe's most horrific actions - the Nazi persecution of Jews in the 1930s and 1940s. It came to this country in the last week of peace before the Second World War in the suitcase of a refugee (my grandfather) fleeing Nazi persecution and stands as a witness to the mass movement of people unleashed by persecution.
