John Peel's wedding invitation

Barry Everard co-owns a music shop in Sheffield called Record Collector. He was invited to John Peel's wedding in 1974. John Ravenscroft, known as John Peel, was a BBC Radio 1 DJ and presenter from 1967 until he died in 2004.

"It's not often that people get the chance to go to the wedding of one of their heroes," says Barry Everard. "John's son William was studying in Sheffield and he recommended our record shop, so I took him for a meal at a cafe in Broomhill - they were very surprised to see John Peel!

"The wedding invitation reads: 'John Ravenscroft and Sheila Gilhooly invite you to the wedding of themselves. Saturday 31st August 1974. Costume should be comfortable rather than formal.'

"Terry Wogan was at the wedding too - their radio programmes were next to each other so they spoke a lot. And Bill Nelson was there as well."
