Kabuki actor Matsumoto Koshiro VII

This is a photograph of the popular Meiji actor Matsumoto Koshiro VII and the companion photo to the one of Ichimura Uzaemon XV. They starred opposite each other in a 1930 production of Kanjincho, the Subscription List at the Kabukiza in Tokyo. Standing around Koshiro are Kojima Zensaburo, an artist, Kitaro Oka, a Kabuki critic and playwright who made a documentary about Koshiro called (in English), 'Without question, a man widely considered upstanding and redoubtable'. Also pictured are Ito Shinsui, an ukiyo e woodblock printer and Nihonga artist, and Hasui Kawase, a painter of Shin Hanga (new style) of woodblock prints. This was during a period when Japan was becoming rapidly militarised and would have been one of first of the last of that decades visits to the Kabuki by Westerners.
