Channel O Spirit of Africa Music Video Awards 2006

  • D'banj

    D'banj, or the 'koko master' as he likes to call himself, picking up the Best Newcomer award. Since his track 'Tongolo', Lagos-based D'banj has become one of Africa's brightest young stars. His new single and video 'Why me' is bound to make him even more popular.

  • Weird MC

    Weird MC picked up the Best Special Effects award for her animated video of her massive hit 'Ijoya'. Since returning back to Lagos from London, Weird MC's career has exploded again.

  • Jonny Ragga

    Addis Ababa-based Reggae Dancehall act Jonny Ragga picked up the Best African East award.

  • Danny K

    Danny K picked up the Best Collaboration Video award for his video 'Music' with Kwaito superstar Mandoza. Danny K is a huge R'n'B star from South Africa and one of his many claims to fame is being the first South African musician to perform on the legendary Oprah Winfrey Show in Chicago.

  • Dare Art Alade

    Dare Art Alade (who rose to fame at a X Factor style show in Africa) picking up the Best R&B Video for 'Escalade'.

  • Zamajobe

    Zamajobe won the award for Best Urban Jazz Video for her song 'Ndawo Yami'. You can check out her music on her homepage.

  • Mode 9

    The night's biggest star was Nigerian rapper Mode 9 who picked up three awards in total (Best Hip Hop Video, Best Director and Video Of The Year).

  • Kau

    The night was hosted by South African stand-up comedian Kau, as well as Channel O VJs.

  • Zola

    South African Kwaito superstar, actor and poet Zola received the Special Recognition Award for his role in the upliftment of youth on the African continent.

  • Zola

    Zola’s status rose dramatically this year with his involvement in the award-winning movie Tsotsi . His social engagement has always been important to him, too, such as the work that he has done as a UNICEF Goodwill ambassador in East Africa.
