Responsible tourism, adrenalin-pumping trips, Lonely Planet, Rough Guides...

General Information

  • World Atlas: Africa

Contains map resources of all African countries. This website also contains many links to a diverse array of political, city and regional maps of the continent.

Guides

  • The Africa Guide

A comprehensive guide to every country in Africa with forums on each one, a regular newsletter, essential travel information (flights, visas, hotels, car hire) and a range of tours from overlanding, to conservation work and safaris. An online shop sells travel gear, African music and magazines.

  • Rough Guides: Africa

Down-to-earth, practical guide to Africa. The website includes a large, clear map of Africa. Click on different countries to find out about the Rough Guide book that accompanies it, and if you like, buy them online, or simply browse through journals that other travellers have posted. And while you're on there, why not look through their World Music section for African CDs - or for mini-guides to African cooking or languages....

  • Lonely Planet: Africa

Publishing trusty guidebooks for independent travellers, Lonely Planet's website, especially its messageboard, the Thorn Tree is an ideal place to meet other like-minded types, brush up on your geography with the clickable map of Africa and arm yourself with vital travel tips.

Responsible Tourism

  • Responsible Tourism Partnership

A not-for-profit organisation that works in partnerships to improve destinations for local people and their visitors. Their African travel page offers valuable links to each country in turn.

  • Tourism Concern

Campaigning to ensure tourism always benefits local communities. From putting a stop to the abuse of porters' human rights on Mt Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, to preventing exploitation of workers in the luxurious holiday resorts, there's also plenty of travel advice for backpackers and tour operators.
