Content available in British Sign Language (BSL)

An overview of BSL on the web and BBC online

Introduction

British Sign Language, also known by the abbreviation BSL, is the language used by over 50,000 deaf people in the UK.

Currently there are not many sites that offer BSL as a communication medium however one example is the British Deaf Association an Organisation that promotes sign language and deaf issues. Information is provided via BSL using Flash technology they also offer a text version of the site. As the use of broadband increases and signing technology develops there will be more web resources for BSL users.

BBC online are currently looking at the possibilities of making more of its signed (BSL) TV content available on demand via BBC online.

BBC signed content

You can view our initial experiments with the provision of signed (BSL) content on BBC online in the Story Update Archive 'Cliffhanger' clips of the Switch website, for example: Switch Series 2: Episode 1 Cliffhanger.
