Changing colours in Opera 8

This page explains step-by-step how to change the text and background colours in Opera 8 for OS X

Note: Mac key convention: ' Ctrl ' is used for 'Control', ' Apple ' is used for 'Command' and ' Alt ' is used for the 'Option' key.

Note: For keyboard access make sure ' Full keyboard access ' is turned on - you can turn it on or off; by pressing ' Ctrl ' + ' F1 ' at any time.

Instructions

  1. Click on the ' Opera' menu and then click on ' Preferences... ' as shown in Fig 1 or press ' Apple ' +',' (comma).

  1. Click on the ' Web pages ' tab or press ' Alt ' + ' Tab ' until the ' Web pages ' tab is selected as shown in Fig 2 .

To change the text colour

  1. Click on the large button next to ' Normal font ' as shown in Fig 2 ( ' Times' ) below or press ' Tab ' until the button is selected and then press the ' Spacebar '.

  1. This will bring up the ' Select font ' window as shown in Fig 3.

  1. click on the box underneath ' color ' or press ' Tab' until the box is highlighted and then press the ' Spacebar ' to bring up the Mac OS colour picker as shown in a Fig 4

  1. Click the bar on the right of the colour picker to change the brightness level of the colour or press ' Tab ' until the slider on the bar is highlighted and use the up and down arrows to change the brightness.
  2. Click on the colour circle to choose a colour - you can also slide around the colours by clicking and holding the mouse down or press ' Tab ' to highlight the spot on the colour circle and press the cursor keys to move around the colour circle.
  3. When you are happy with your colour choice click the ' OK ' button or press ' Enter ' twice to return to the 'Preferences ' window.
  4. if you do not need to change the background or link colours you can skip the next section and follow the instructions under the heading ' Telling the browser to use your colours '.

To change background or link colours

  1. Click on the large button next to ' Background color ' as shown in Fig 2 above or press ' Tab ' until the button is selected and then press the ' Spacebar '.
  2. Click the bar on the right of the colour picker to change the brightness level of the colour or press ' Tab ' until the slider on the bar is highlighted and use the up and down arrows to change the brightness as shown in Fig 5.
  3. Click on the colour circle to choose a colour - you can also slide around the colours by clicking and holding the mouse down or press ' Tab ' to highlight the spot on the colour circle and press the cursor keys to move around the colour circle.
  4. When you are happy with your background colour choice click the ' OK ' button or press ' Enter ' to return to the 'Preferences ' window.

  1. Repeat steps 1 to 4 for ' Normal link colour ' and ' Visited link colour ' if you need to change them.

Telling the browser to use your colours

Once you have changed all the colours you want to, you then need to change the browser settings. To do this:

  1. Click on the ' Advanced ' tab or press ' Alt ' + ' Tab' to highlight it (see Fig 2 above).
  2. Click on ' Content ' or use the up and down arrow to selected it (see Fig 6).
  3. Click on the ' Style Options ' button or press ' Tab ' until it is highlighted and press the ' Spacebar ' as highlighted in Fig 6.

  1. Under both the ' Author mode ' and ' User mode ' options turn off page style sheet by clicking on the checkbox next to ' Page style sheet ' or press ' Tab ' until the checkbox in the ' Author mode ' column is selected and press the ' Spacebar ' , repeat for ' Page style sheet in the ' User mode ' column. The checkboxes should no longer have ' ticks' in them. (See Fig 7 below).
  2. Repeat step 1 for the ' Page fonts and colors' checkboxes to turn them off.
  3. Select the ' My fonts and colours ' under both the ' Author mode ' and ' User mode ' headings either by clicking on the checkboxes with a mouse or press ' Tab ' until the checkbox in the ' Author mode ' column is selected and press the ' Spacebar ' , repeat for ' My fonts and colours ' in the ' User mode ' column. The checkboxes should have ' ticks' in them. (See Fig 7 below).
  4. If you changed the 'Normal link colour' and the ' Visited link color' repeat step 3 above for the ' My link style ' checkboxes to turn them on.

  1. Click the ' OK ' button twice or press ' Enter ' twice to return to Opera.

Note: If this does not work it could be because your computer settings cannot be changed due to local IT policies - contact your local IT support for further help.
