Changing colours in Opera

This page explains step-by-step how to change the text and background colours in Opera 6 for OS 8 and 9

Note: In Opera 6 for the Mac you cannot change the text colour only the background and link colours.

Instructions

  1. Click on the ' Edit ' and then click on ' Preferences... ' menu as shown in Fig 1 or press ' Apple ' + ' Y '.

  1. Click on ' Fonts and colors' or press the down arrow to select it (see fig 2).
  2. Click the box next to ' Background color ' as highlighted in Fig 2 below (No Keyboard shortcut). This brings up the Mac OS colour picker.

  1. There are a number of options of how you choose your background colour. In this example we will use the ' Crayon Picker ' for simplicity but you could use any of the other options such as ' HTML Picker ' or ' HSV Picker ' found in the left-hand pane.
  2. Click on the ' Crayon Picker ' in the left section or press ' Tab' until the left-hand section is highlighted and use the up and down arrows to select ' Crayon Picker ' as shown in Fig 3.

  1. Click on a crayon colour to select it or press ' Apple' which will change the icon to an 'Eyedropper' and click anywhere on the screen while still holding the ' Apple ' key down to pick the colour from where you clicked (No keyboard shortcut).
  2. Click on the ' OK ' button with the mouse or press ' Enter ' to return to the ' Preferences ' menu.
  3. To change the visited and unvisited link colours click on the ' My link style' button shown in Fig 2 above (no keyboard shortcut).
  4. In the ' Link style ' window click the coloured box next to 'Color' under the ' Not visited' column - see Fig 4 below. This will bring up the Mac OS colour picker as shown in Fig 3 above. (No keyboard shortcut).

  1. Repeat steps 4 - 6 above and then Click the ' OK ' button with the mouse or press ' Enter ' to return to the Link style window.
  2. Repeat the same steps for the ' Visited ' link colour as you did for the ' Not visited ' link colour.
  3. When you have chosen both ' Visited ' and ' Not visited ' link colours Click on the ' OK ' button with the mouse or press ' Enter ' to return to the ' Preferences ' menu.

Next you need to tell Opera to use your chosen colour rather than the colour set by the page, to do this:

  1. Click on ' Page Style ' in the left-hand column or press ' Tab ' until the left-hand column is selected and use the up and down arrows to select 'Page style from the list . (see Fig 5).
  2. Click on the 'Page style sheet ' checkboxes under both the ' Author mode ' and ' User mode ' to remove the ' tick '.
  3. Click on the 'Page fonts and colours ' checkboxes under both the ' Author mode ' and ' User mode ' to remove the ' tick '.
  4. Make sure the 'My fonts and colours ' checkboxes under both the ' Author mode ' and ' User mode ' have a tick in them.
  5. If you changed the ' Visited ' and ' Not visited ' link colours make sure the 'My link style ' checkboxes under both the ' Author mode ' and ' User mode ' have a tick in them.

  1. Click the ' OK ' button or by press ' Enter ' to return to Opera.

Note: If this does not work it could be because your computer settings cannot be changed due to local IT policies - contact your local IT support for further help.
