Changing colours in Firefox

This page explains step-by-step how to change the text and background colours in Firefox for OS X

Note: Mac key convention: ' Ctrl ' is used for 'Control', ' Apple ' is used for 'Command' and ' Alt ' is used for the 'Option' key.

Note: For keyboard access make sure ' Full keyboard access ' is turned on - you can turn it on or off; by pressing ' Ctrl ' + ' F1 ' at any time.

Instructions

  1. Click the ' Firefox ' menu with the mouse or press ' Ctrl ' + ' F2 ' to highlight the menu bar and then press the right arrow to highlight the ' Firefox ' menu .
  2. Click on ' Preferences' or press the down arrow to highlight ' Preferences ' and then press ' Enter '. See Fig 1 below.

  1. Make sure the ' General ' tab is selected, if not click on it ( no keyboard shortcut ).
  2. Click on ' Fonts and colours ' as shown in fig 2 ( no keyboard shortcut ).

  1. Choose to have your Mac OS colour scheme settings by clicking on the ' Use system colors ' checkbox to select it (no keyboard shortcut).
  2. Next click on ' Always use my: Colors ' checkbox as shown in Fig 3 (no keyboard shortcut).
  3. Click the ' OK ' button or press ' Enter ' twice to return to Firefox.

On a Mac you have limited options to change you OS colour scheme so you are more likely to need to set text and background colours just for Firefox. To do this:

  1. Follow steps 1-4 above.
  2. Make sure the ' Use system colors ' checkbox is unchecked by clicking on it (no keyboard shortcut).
  3. For your text colour, click the box next to the ' Text': heading or press ' Tab ' to jump to it and press the ' Spacebar ' to bring up the colour swatch as shown in Fig 4 below.
  4. Click on the text colour you want, or use the cursor keys to browse the list of colours, when the colour you want is highlighted press ' Enter '.

  1. Next click on ' Always use my: Colors ' checkbox to select it as shown in Fig 3 above (no keyboard shortcut).
  2. If you do not need to change the ' Background ' colour or ' Link colors ' , to return to Firefox click the ' OK ' button twice or press ' Enter ' twice and ignore the rest of these steps but make sure you click on the ' Reload current page ' button on the Navigation toolbar or press ' Apple' + ' R ' .
  3. For your background colour click the box next to the ' Background': heading or press ' Tab ' to jump to it and press the ' Spacebar ' to bring up the colour swatch as shown in Fig 4 above.
  4. Click on the background colour you want, or use the cursor keys to browse the list of colours, when the colour you want is highlighted press ' Enter '.
  5. Next, If it is not already selected click on ' Always use my: Colors ' checkbox to select it as shown in Fig 3 above (no keyboard shortcut).
  6. For the ' Link Colors' follow the steps above but choose the 'Unvisited Links' and 'Visited Links' boxes.
  7. To return to Firefox click the ' OK ' button twice or press ' Enter ' twice.
  8. Finally click on the ' Reload current page ' button on the Navigation toolbar or press ' Apple ' + ' R ' to reload the page with your colour settings.

Note: If this does not work it could be because your computer settings cannot be changed due to local IT policies - contact your local IT support for further help.
