Changing fonts in Netscape

How to change the font style in your browser

Instructions

  1. Click on the ' Edit ' menu with the mouse. (No keyboard shortcut).
  2. Click on ' Preferences ' (No keyboard shortcut).
  3. Click on the ' Fonts ' heading underneath the ' Appearance ' category or press the down arrow key to select it. If you cannot see the ' Font ' heading, you need to expand the ' Appearance ' category. Do this by clicking on the arrow next to ' Appearance ', by ' double clicking ' on the heading or using the up arrow key to select ' Appearance ' and then press the right arrow key to expand the options then use the down arrow to select ' Fonts ' - see Fig 1.

Now you have to change either the serif or sans-serif font depending on the style of font you want. Examples of serif fonts include: Times, Times New Roman and Palatino. Examples of sans-serif fonts include: Helvetica, Arial and Tahoma.

To change the serif font:

  1. Click on the drop down box next to ' Serif ' and select the serif font you want to use or press ' Tab ' to navigate to the drop down box next to ' Serif ' and then press the up or down arrows to select the font you want to use and then press ' Enter '.

Or to change the sans-serif font:

  1. Click on the drop down box next to ' Sans-serif ' and select the serif font you want to use or press ' Tab ' to navigate to the drop down box next to ' Serif ' and then press the up or down arrows to select the font you want to use and then press ' Enter '.

Next you need to set the ' Proportional ' font to either Serif or Sans-serif depending on your choice above. to do this:

  1. Click on the drop down box next to ' Proportional ' and select either ' Serif ' or ' Sans-serif ' or press ' Tab ' to navigate to the drop down box next to ' Proportional ' and then press the up or down arrows to select either ' Serif ' or ' Sans-serif ' and then press ' Enter '. See Fig 1 above.

Next you need to make sure that the ' Allow documents to use other fonts ' box is not checked . If it is checked most web pages will ignore your font settings. To uncheck it (remove the tick or cross):

  1. Click the checkbox labelled ' Allow documents to use other fonts ' to remove the ' tick ' or ' cross ' or press the ' Tab ' key, to navigate to the checkbox labelled ' Allow documents to use other fonts ' as highlighted in Fig 2 and then press the ' Spacebar ' to uncheck the box (remove the tick or cross).

  1. When you have chosen your fonts, click ' OK ' or press ' Enter ' to return Netscape.

Note: If this does not work it could be because your computer settings cannot be changed due to local IT policies - contact your local IT support for further help.
