This guide is different depending on your operating system (Windows, Mac or Linux). Please select from the options below.

Press the Windows key + Pause to open a window similar to one of those shown in Fig 1 and Fig 2.

Click on the Apple icon in the top left-hand corner of the menu bar and select 'About this Mac' from the drop-down menu to open the window shown in Fig 1. Alternatively, press Ctrl + F2 and use the arrow keys to navigate to 'About this Mac', then press Enter.

For the purposes of these How to guides, it is not important to know the version of the Linux operating system (for example, Ubuntu) that you are using. Instead, it is which version of the desktop environment you are using that matters. The How to guides are available for both Gnome and KDE.
Gnome
Click on 'System' in the menu bar, then select 'About GNOME' from the drop-down menu. Alternatively, press Alt + F1 and use the left and right arrow keys to select 'System', then, using the down arrow key, select 'About GNOME' and press Enter to open the window shown in Fig 1.

KDE
Open your system's file manager programme (it will be either Dolphin or Konqueror, depending on your setup). Click on 'Help' in the menu bar, then select 'About KDE' from the drop-down menu. Alternatively, press Alt + H and use the down arrow key to select 'About KDE' and press Enter to open the window shown in Fig 2.
