Profile: Vision mixer

Naomi Neufeld is a vision mixer on Strictly: It Takes Two. She explains her role, emphasising that to be a successful vision mixer you need to be decisive and unhesitating. In a live programme there is no second chance to do something again.

Vision mixers cut the camera shots together in any show that is recorded on multiple cameras. This can include studio shows and outside broadcasts, whether pre-recorded or live. They sit next to the director in the gallery and operate a vision mixing desk. They cut and mix between shots, play in taped items and overlay graphics, all on the instructions of the director.

"If you hesitate, you've missed the shot." – Naomi Neufeld

Working on Strictly: It Takes Two, Naomi is responsible for selecting which shots from the four studio cameras will appear live on televisions round the country.

She emphasises that to be a successful vision mixer you need to be decisive and unhesitating. In a live programme there is no second chance to do something again. So it's vital to be able to maintain high levels of concentration and to be calm under pressure. While some vision mixers work on adrenaline, Naomi likes to stay calm, so that her heartbeat doesn't sound louder than the audio of the show.
