Reporting conflict: Paul Wood in Syria

Reporting from a conflict zone makes getting from place to place and remaining in contact with London extremely challenging. Middle East correspondent Paul Wood discusses his reporting from Syria in 2012.

You often end up doing your risk assessments in the field and that focuses the mind. What happens if your contacts or safe house don’t materialise - do you have a Plan B?

Paul was reporting from Syria and he and his team had no visas. To avoid being traced, they virtually disappeared for a couple of weeks to collect their material, only contacting London occasionally. His advice is not to broadcast from the place you’re filming in.

Some of the stories you hear can be emotionally distressing - but are they true? Before you broadcast, make sure you can find eyewitnesses and corroborate stories.
