Regional TV presenter: South East Today

As ‘the face’ of the BBC on their patch, regional TV presenters need to adopt a style that’s authoritative, engaging, warm and approachable. Knowing the issues that matter to the audience is also key. Polly Evans has co-anchored BBC South East Today since 2009.

Polly Evans is one of the main presenters of BBC South East Today based in Tunbridge Wells. She says her journalistic skills are as important as her presenting ability.

She contributes story ideas and writes scripts and headlines daily. So it’s important to have an in-depth knowledge of the region in order to ask the right questions and get the best out of live interviews and guests.

Social media is increasingly important to her role. Twitter and Facebook, for example, allow her to connect with the audience throughout the day. She also scripts, records and posts a Facebook trail before the evening programme goes on air.

In this video, Polly outlines some of the skills she needs to do her job and explains why it’s important to stay calm and approachable at all times.
