Producer/presenter relationship

Jamie Cullum on collaborating with radio producers

Producer/presenter relationship

Singer-songwriter Jamie Cullum presents a weekly jazz show for Radio 2. As well as entertaining listeners, he relies on a strong, professional relationship with his producer, Karen Pearson. Here he talks us through the process and benefits of investing in this crucial partnership.

The important thing about my producer is that she knows what I’m thinking before I think it and vice versa

End Quote Jamie Cullum

Producers have several key responsibilities and working closely with the show’s talent is one of the most important. Karen's input includes giving feedback to Jamie on his radio presenting techniques and ensuring he has everything in place, including CDs, timings and a script, ahead of the live recording. In return, Jamie provides musical expertise, ideas and a passion for connecting with audiences.

Jamie suggests that shared reflection and anticipating each other’s needs can help collaboration. He believes the best producers are strong characters who put their stamp on a show while being open to suggestions from the presenter.
