We maintain a number of separate ventures across the world some of which help fund our public services.
BBC World Service, BBC World News, BBC Worldwide and BBC Monitoring are some of the ways people might encounter our services internationally.
BBC World Service
BBC World Service is an international multimedia broadcaster, delivering a wide range of language and regional services on radio, TV, online and via wireless handheld devices.
It uses multiple platforms to reach its weekly audience of 166 million globally, including shortwave, AM, FM, digital satellite and cable channels.
Its news sites include audio and video content and offer opportunities to join the global debate.
BBC World News
World News is the BBC’s commercially funded
international news and information television channel, broadcasting in English
24 hours a day in many countries across the world. BBC World News is available
in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide, around 300 million
households and 1.8 million hotel rooms.
The channel provides hourly
bulletins with news, business, sport and weather information, and also
broadcasts the best of the BBC’s current affairs, documentary and lifestyle
The BBC’s main commercial arm, BBC Worldwide is headquartered in London.
Since 2007, however, the business has sought to operate more internationally, and now over two-thirds of its revenues coming from outside the UK.
BBC Worldwide exists to support the BBC public service mission and to maximise profits on its behalf. It does this through investing in, commercialising and showcasing content from the BBC around the world, in a way that is consistent with BBC standards and values. The business also builds the reach and reputation of the BBC brand overseas and champions British creativity. In 2013/14, BBC Worldwide generated profits of £157.4m and sales of £1,042.3m, returning £173.8m to the BBC.
To help deliver its commercial activity, BBC Worldwide has offices around the world, with staff who have local language skills who can better understand what local audiences and clients are looking for, and who act as global ambassadors for the BBC and the UK.
These offices are based across North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australasia.
BBC World runs a number of channels broadcasting outside of the UK.
BBC Monitoring provides news, information
and comment gathered from mass media around the world.
