Helen Thomas is Head of Regional and Local Programmes for the BBC in Yorkshire, based at the BBC's regional headquarters in Leeds.

She is responsible for all of the regional and local output, including BBC Radio Leeds, BBC Radio York, Look North, Inside Out, The Politics Show and the local websites.

Originally from Leeds, Helen was educated at Dinnington Comprehensive School before gaining a BA (Hons) in Management from Bradford College.

She began her career in broadcasting in the commercial sector, joining in 1982 as a trainee journalist, before moving to the BBC in 1985 to work as a producer for Radio York, where she also presented and reported.

Having taken time out of her career to have three children, Helen joined Leeds-based Yorkshire Television in 1992 where she established the radio news operations. She then moved to York where she co-presented the Breakfast Show and ran four radio newsrooms for Minster Sound Radio.

Helen rejoined the BBC as Editor of BBC Radio Humberside in 1999 and progressed to take the role of Executive Head of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire for two-and-a-half years before becoming Head of Region for Yorkshire.

Helen's interests include keeping up with her adventurous teenage children, and going on very long walks with her dog.
