Biography

Last updated February 2011

Liam has been Controller, BBC Daytime since February 2006. Liam's role runs across the whole day and includes The One Show and the 6-7pm slot on BBC Two.

Under Liam's tenure, the schedule has been revamped, with a stronger emphasis on drama, consumer/current affairs and event-led programming.

His commissions for BBC One and Two have included factual events with drama tie-ins such as The Week We Went To War and Land Girls; Rewind The 60s and The Indian Doctor; The Story Of Us and Brinkburn Street. Other highlights have included Great British Railway Journeys with Michael Portillo, the Jimmy McGovern drama Moving On, the Alexander Armstrong-fronted quiz, Pointless, and Rip-Off Britain (with Gloria Hunniford, Jennie Bond and Angela Rippon) which has recently transferred to peak-time BBC One attracting audiences well in excess of 5 million.

The shift in direction has paid dividends with increased ratings, higher audience appreciation and a much greater breadth of programming genres across daytime.

Prior to this role, Liam ran daytime programming at ITV, and was responsible for the commissioning and successful launch of Dickinson's Real Deal and The Alan Titchmarsh Show.

Before leaving for ITV Liam was Head of Scheduling and Planning, BBC One, helping to launch shows that were hits with the critics and audience alike including Strictly Come Dancing, Doctor Who and Planet Earth.

He joined BBC One from UK Horizons where he worked as Channel Editor and also devised the idea for the UK History channel.

Prior to this role Liam worked in scheduling and planning at the BBC, becoming Head of Scheduling, BBC Two in 1999. During this time he helped to redefine the Channel with the launch of groundbreaking titles such The Office, The Naked Chef and Cops.

Liam originally joined the BBC in 1995 working in audience research.
