Senior Staff: BBC North

  • Mark's role includes setting the ways of working strategy for BBC North. This is the strategy that determines how programme content is made, and what production services, facilities and technologies are required.
  • He specifies and ensures the delivery of the production technology required for the strategy, including the creative tools and new working practices required to deliver the benefits of the BBC North programme. 
  • Mark is responsible for defining the specialist delivery resource, both internal to and external to the BBC, required for different production work groups. 
  • He provides leadership to the BBC North production management community, ensuring that production departments across the site have the technologies and workflows to deliver the creativity and efficiency which underpins BBC North; that they are innovating and driving value for money; and that North production is compliant in safety and business continuity. 
  • He also manages the commercial aspects of the BBC's relationships with third party service providers on the MediaCity site, maintaining Service Level Agreements and ensuring that external costs are managed within agreed budgets.

Biography

Mark Harrison began his career as an academic, teaching and lecturing in History at Cambridge University. He has a number of academic publications to his name, including the book, Crowds And History.

Mark then moved into broadcasting, first as a Director and Series Producer in the BBC Network Documentaries department in Bristol and News and Current Affairs in London.

In 1993 he became a freelance Director and Executive Producer working for a range of independent production companies, and producing mostly for Channel 4, the BBC and Discovery. He won a number of awards for his work, both in Britain and internationally. In 2000 he became Managing Director of a small independent production company before returning to the BBC nine years ago to take up the role, first of Head of Arts and then Head of Multiplatform Production. During this time he also established an expertise in production innovation.

Mark was appointed to his current role as Controller of Production for BBC North in January 2010. He is also the BBC's lead for the The Digital Production Partnership – a joint initiative between BBC, ITV and Channel 4. Mark and his family moved from London to Wilmslow in April 2011.

Expenses and central bookings

Expenses are costs incurred by BBC staff on behalf of the BBC and claimed through the BBC's expenses system (e-expenses). Central bookings are costs incurred on behalf of the BBC and booked through the BBC's central bookings system. Both expenses and central bookings are published every three months.
