Biography

Simon Burke is a Chartered Accountant, having qualified in Dublin in 1980 before moving to Coopers & Lybrand in London where he specialised in investigation and corporate recovery work.

In 1987 he joined Virgin where he held various positions, starting as Corporate Finance Manager and finally becoming Chief Executive of Virgin Entertainment Group, £1bn worldwide retail and cinema business.

In 1999 Simon was drafted in as Chairman & Chief Executive of Hamleys PLC, which he turned around and sold at a hefty premium in 2003. Following a period working on a number of private equity projects he became Chairman of Superquinn, the Irish supermarket chain, following its buyout by an investor group in 2005.

In October 2010 he was appointed as chairman of HobbyCraft, the specialist retailer. Simon is a Trustee of the National Gallery in London and a director of Mitchells and Butlers PLC, the UK's largest managed pub and restaurant operator.
