Primal Scream's latest studio album should come with a health warning for those with a nervous disposition. Their energy is turned up to eleven and sod any city riot, there's one going on inside my head. It's all good though and as refreshing as a blustery sea breeze the morning after a heavy one.

The Glaswegian rockers have been through a number of incarnations in their twenty (!) years. I first got into them during their psychedelic dance rock Screamadelica days but the noughties finds them more reminiscent of the Rolling Stones in their heyday. This is due to a combination of good rock tunes with great roots instrumentation. The psychedelica hasn't completely disappeared though and can be found particularly in Little Death (which sounds like a homage to The Doors), whereas Sometimes I Feel So Lonely proves that Bobby can still do wistful when he wants. In fact there's a number of styles here including some good yeeha country on numbers like Hell's Comin' Down.

Yet despite the different tones each track still sounds distinctively Primal Scream and at the end of Riot City Blues you may feel exhausted but blissfully sated.

I'm fed up with people harking back to Screamadelica. Yes it was great, but so was Vanishing Point. So was Xtrmntr. So was Evil Heat. This one is poor by comparison. It has its moments, but hasn't got the structure of past glories. It sounds to me that a fair amount is contrived too. Like the 'One last time' shout from Country Girl. Don't give up yet boys, but get Shields back ASAP.
