The Great Debate
Which eighties indie band should reform next?
Want to know the best gig of the year so far? Not Green Day, not Idlewild, but a bunch of scruffy chancers from Stourbridge who’d only got back together for a birrovalaff and some beer money.
Pop Will Eat Itself
And yet Pop Will Eat Itself were not only approximately 14 times better than they used to be, but also better than most of the class of 2005.

They’re hardly the only band from the era currently on the comeback trail. There’s The Wedding Present and The Wonder Stuff (even though neither is much more than David Gedge/Miles Hunt and some blokes no one’s ever heard of). Happy Mondays are back again to cash in on Bez’s post-Big Brother celebrity. The Cocteau Twins are on their way and there are even whispers about The Specials.

And most astonishing of all, Guy Chadwick and Terry Bickers have buried an entire hardware shop full of hatchets to get The House Of Love back together. And, staggeringly, they appear to have picked up at the exact place where they left off (musically I mean, not whichever lay-by they kicked Terry into when they split).

Heck, even Duran Duran were officially Quite Good when I saw them live last month. So given that eighties bands uniquely seem able to reform without being utterly embarrassing, who should be the next band to give it a go?

There’s always the two great unattainables, of course: The Jam and The Smiths. The latter is never going to happen, obviously, thanks to you lot actually going out and buying You Are The Quarry, despite it not really being much better than any of the Moz solo albums that small children used to laugh at in the street.

As for The Jam … well, Weller does the odd tune live nowadays, so maybe it’s a possibility. Just as long as he doesn’t reform the Style Council.

Of course, there are some we don’t want to happen: The Stone Roses (Ian Brown’s voice somehow having got worse in recent years) and The Jesus And Mary Chain (although it would be amusing to see the 'caught red-handed' expressions on the sour faces of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club).

And then there are some that we do. A quick office poll suggests The La’s, Age Of Chance, Orange Juice, The Police, The Dead Kennedys (with Jello Biafra, not the current Jello-free farrago) and Felt.

But the one that would make me most happy (apart from maybe The Popguns, who actually did do one gig last year only for nothing to be heard since, or a Betty Boo comeback) would be The Primitives. It seems unlikely, given that Tracey Tracey – despite being possibly the best pop star ever – disappeared without a trace (ha!) after their demise, but we can dream …

In the meantime, your own suggestions will be gratefully received below.

Ride, Senseless Things, Kingmaker. I'll be happy with any of them!

Daz, Lytham
Definitely Bogshed! 20 years later and I still can't get those basslines out of my head.

Simon David, London
The band I would like most to see reform are obscure one hit wonders Scarlet Party, who are one of the great lost bands of the eighties. They are remembered mostly for their single 101 damnations, but had plenty of other strong catchy melodic songs and were also a great live band. They looked set for commercial success, but for some reason they didn’t quite catch on. Timing is everything, so my guess is that they suffered for sounding too much like the Beatles (before Oasis made it fashionable again in the mid 90's). Perhaps they were just a little too late for the 70's Mod revival and ten years too early for Britpop? However, they certainly deserved to make it the first time round so it would be great to see them give it another go.

Philip, Shipston on Stour
The Associates - although there may have to be some Edgar Allen Poe type jiggery pokery to manage it! Slightly more realistically, how about the Rhythm Sisters? Fun tunes, great attitude and as they had a new cd out this year a possibility they're both alive.

Prague Czech Rep
Big Black is the band I would love to have seen, they were snowed in Washington 1985... out when I had tickets in DC. Dead Kenedies 1984 Connecticut, one of the best shows I saw in 1984... Clash if we could bring Joe back. After I saw the Clash in 84 Belgium, looking for a place to sleep I saw Joe Strumer he gave me a beer, spoke about Spanish guitar that he was into a bit, he said I was free to go to Paris in the bus, but I met a girl I would spend the night with... I think he understood, Long live the world Wide Revolution Joe.

Barry in Doncaster
Please bring the Playground Chairs out of hiding.

steve, Reading
The Housemartins for me please and Ride

NICKY, SOUTH LONDON
BRING BACK THE HUNTERS CLUB - BRILLIANT ROCK N ROLL FUN AND GREAT LADS TOO!!! I HAVE MANY HAPPY MEMORIES OF THEM FROM THE 80'S - IT'S WHAT ROCK AS WHAT ROCK SHOULD BE - SHAMBOLIC BRILLIANT CHAOS & BURNING HATS TOO!! MY ULTIMATE GIG WOULD BE ZODIAC MINDWARP WITH HUNTERS CLUB AS SUPPORT.....

If ever there was a band who deserved to make it big but were cruelly denied, then that band was Scarlet Party. Okay, so EMI made a quick buck from promoting KajaGooGoo instead, but the future returns from Scarlet Party would have dwarfed this. Come on EMI, dig those tapes out and give Scarlet Skies the audience it deserves.

jasper, peebles.
redlorry, yellow lorry, poors of reign, the kwaali.

dermot, limerck.
poors of reign!!!!

Chris Dench London, England
Another vote for King Swamp from me. Saw them 3 times at the Old Marquee in 1989. Stunning. Love to see Curve get back together. The best re-union would be SOUNDGARDEN. One of the finest bands of all time.

Andy ,Manchester
The Man from Delmonte. If you're having a bad day-just listen to 'Big Noise' and you can't help but feel good!!

John, Halifax
Scarlet Party - 101 Damnations was one of the greatest numbers of the early 80's

Chris, North West
Theatre of Hate.

Cindy London
King Swamp...please please get back together, i met my old man at their Marquee show in '89. 2 amazing albums: King Swamp and Wiseblood (grab copies if you can) and incredible live. I was lucky enough to see Walter Wray play live recently...what a voice!

Anisa, Pinner
Damn Right, King Swamp were the best band around at the time. Saw Walter Wray and Steve Halliwell last night so you never know. Outstanding tracks, Kiss The Sun, Is This Love and Blown Away. Have a listen - you will not be disappointed.

Jason, Leicester
Seems to be a bit of a Leicester theme runnin through so why not The Sinatras, PO!, The Originals, The Ammonites, Cucumber 3 Pack, Elevator, NJ's Groovers, The Cybermen or The Marmite Sisters!

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Yes, I would love to see Stump reform & A Fierce Pancake should definitely be re-released !

simon, rugby
mark gardener and andy bell put your differences aside and bring Ride back to the masses....Andy, ditch Oasis youre too good for them

Glyn, Southampton
GBOA, Stump, Crazyhead and the Mindwarp to name but several. Would say The Mish, Stuffies and Jesus Jones - but they keep coming back around. hooray. Saw Mark Burgess and The Sons of God not too long ago - supporting New Model Army - they did some Chameleons stuff and it rocked.

Ste, Stockport.
There's really only one act from this time that needs to reform and show the world how great they were: The Man From Delmonte. You know I speak the truth.

Jon / Bolton
Cud are reforming for a mini-tour in August to promote "Rich & Strange: an anthology": Newcastle Academy 2 Aug 14th; Liverpool Academy 2 Aug 15th - Leeds, Birmingham and London to be announced. Come on down!!

Chris Volunteer, Bishkek
Reform now!!! Dave Howard Singers, Gaye Bykers on Acid, The Janitors and Bogshed!!!

Paul, Bristol
The Rhythm Sisters were fantstic live. Are they still about?

John.Somewhere out there.
No one has mentioned The Honey Smugglers. Pure and honest psychadelic pop at its best. But then its all just Pie in the Sky.

Brandon Chicago, Il
Stump were a truly unique band. I'd love to see them reunite. They would be like a breath of fresh air compared to the lame, retro-obsessed bands of today.

Dave, Leeds
I heard the Bridewell Taxis have officially reformed and are doing a gig at Leeds Uni in the Stylus bar on Friday 31st March - can't wait to relive my youth!!! Be good to see some old faces from back in the day if anyone fancies it!

Billy B
Does anyone know what the members of The Primitives are doing now and do they have any plans to reform i saw them at one of there last gigs at the after dark club in reading berks

Robber Byker Walsall

Hertford
Dif Juz - the best and most underrated band ever!!

Carlos Ramirez Edinburgh
Definitely THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN...Wow!!

NP, London
Yeah, I totally agree with you on The Bridewell Taxis score - It's fantastic that they are doing gigs again! If they were from Manchester they would have been MASSIVE! - I'm from Manchester and followed the Bridewells around in the Halcyon days of my teeange years - there was fair following of Mancs that supported this woefully underrated band. I've never stopped playing their tunes all these years and their tracks still sound fresh - Awesome songs!

Micky Portman London
I played bass with Scarlet Party in their last year, they were my mates and the greatest live band I ever worked with, remember 101 Damnations? that song means even more now.. than then....

Stuart from Bristol.
Saw the mighty Bob Mould (ex Husker Du / Sugar) solo at the Fleece on Monday night. He's still got what it takes.

Dave blond London
Oh god not the 80's again.remember the fashion ! The only good bands were the bad ass bands like minwarp and the bykers!

Nigel parr Ansty leicestershire

JILL -New york
I thought the BUTTHOLES were still going in one form or another?

Dan the Man - Manchester
Definately gaye bykers on acid, stone roses ,black grape, inspiral carpets mad for it lads...

Edd y Beef - Bolton
I think these old bands mentioned don't reform because they are too fat, old, bold or can not be bothered with it.It is a young man/womans game ! still respect to any one in a band its hard work even if your band sucks its hard work...its time for some young un's too have a go.

Thom, London
I agree with Amelia, The Rhythm Sisters, I saw them live so many times and every time was a unique experience. They wrote brilliant pop songs in a style i've never come across before or since. Also Prefab Sprout.

Dan, Ann Arbor Michigan, U.S.A.
STUMP!! Why have they not at least reissued the CD a fierce pancake?

Rod, Glossop.
Icycle works, the Las,poors of reign, the dust devils, and the march violets. Specialy the march violets.

Amelia, London
I wish The Rhythm Sisters would reform, they were so real.

alan cherry from the clout, Leeds.
i don't think the undertones should be playing without Fergeal Sharkey. The poors of reign where good, prefab sprout and the smiths where good, and the clout from leeds.

edie-sheffield
Dead Kennedys and Exploited!!!!

Carrie, Chicago
Prefab Sprout! I loved the elegance they brought to straight pop music.

Tony - Norwich
I just bought a Video from ebay of "Acid Daze 1987". It has Clint and another member from "Pop Will Eat itself" dancing in their underpants like pole dancers through Gaye Bykers on Acid's set!!!you don't get bands and gigs like that any more!!!

johnny G london
best live band i ever, saw the woodentops. i saw loadsa bands through the 80's but that one wins. they seemed to just disappear.

Dave blond London Hackney
I saw the "Fields of the nephilm" play with "Gaye bykers on acid" back in the day and they were both great!!! looking forward to new albums from both of these fine 1980s super retro bands!!!!!!!

Terry H Leeds
Would Love to see the BRIDEWELL TAXIS back again they are just brilliant Give In what a song

Mark Davis, Wakefield.
Bring back "Fields of the Nephilim".

Herman Cole Manchester
Gaye bykers on Acid rocked man! they should definately reform. They are a very underated british band that were way ahead of their time! Classic british rock band in the league of the stones and the who!

Marie, Manchester
Poors of Reign. Saw a few gigs in Manchester, always great live and I still play the Album 'Wrecked' now. You may all be balder and fatter now but it's only the music that matters.

markus / bolton
I think some clever spark should form a tribute band to rock legends from leicester Gaye Bykers on Acid....

dan, wolverhampton
Talking heads should reform most underrated band ever

Paul H, Darlington
There were a lot of bands in the 80's that did'nt get the success & acknowledgement they deserved, because they were out of step with the prevailing trends of the times (y'know, making money, mullets, shoulder pads, synthetic shallowness).I'd like to see the following come back & get some belated kudos:- The Chameleons,Teardrop Explodes,The Very Things,Scarlet Party,The Rain Parade,Dream Syndicate,The Fuzztones,Magazine,Loop,Icicle Works,& Talk Talk.

Steve Newcastle
Mint haven;t heard some o the names passed here for ages n am buzzin to dig out some old albums, The wedding present, saw them at Leeds fest this summer made me wanna buy some suff o there's. Saw the Popguns about ten years ago in Newcastle in what used to be the riverside which turned into foundation, there were more band members than fans!! There was me, me sister and one other guy paid to see them but it was totally mint sat and talked with them after. Would love to see new stuff from them, the darling buds and the primitives! Fuzz pop forever!

Sam,, Melbourne
Never happen but,,,,,,,,, The Smiths

Darren - miserable in Manchester
I agree totally with the Popguns comment, have regularly checked on internet just in case they did gig, that would be a joy!!!!!

Graham Newcastle
The primitives and Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, i saw them both on the same bill in the mid to late 80's.

Simon Leicester
poors of reign were my dad's band, brainy is still going. As for my dad (darren bullows), just chilling writing stuff.

JonL, Sydney Australia (formerly London UK)
My list of bands I loved to see live in the eighties, but would they still be as good? Monochrome Set The Leather Nun Zodiac Mindwarp Caberet Voltaire Tuxedo Moon Echo and the Bunnymen Sisters of Mercy (original line up). My god it was 20years ago when they played their final gig at the Albert Hall The Mission (again original line up) Fields of the Nephalim (only kidding) House of Love The Young Gods Hoodoo Gurus Fad Gadget

Phil, Belfast
Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, Cud, and Sugar (definitely as good as Husker Du)

Chas Darlington
The Rainmakers altho a tour would be a problem with Bob playing Kansas City every Wednesday !!!

Tim / Leeds
To the lad from Leeds, the Bachelor Pad DID play there, they played that short-lived venue under the railway station which is now a cafe or something. And to the lad that wrote the piece re-the Primitives - Tracey's sung on quite a few bits in the past few years, notably Pink Bomb's "Indica" and some stuff a couple of years ago with Slacker's Delight. Also Paul guitarist is DJing at HDIFTBL in London sometime soon. And I'd like to see the Darling Buds reform please.

Stuart, Thorne
I would like to see The Playground Chairs reform. They supported The Bridewell Taxis in the 90's and it would be great to see the two perform together again.

Leeds
The Bridewell taxis are playing again, in response to Robert from london.October 7 Joseph Well Leeds.A band worthy of superstardom, and if they would have been from Manchester and not Leeds they would have been bigger than the Roses at that time.Every promoter and radio station was up the backside of any Manchester band whereas The Wedding Present,Bridewells,Cud didnt get the recognition they deserved.Get yer ticket and support the Bridewells!

Peter Myatt/Norwich
Now that the mission are back touring, the only band that needs to get back together (yet again) is All About Eve, please, please, please. Whatever happend to Tim Bricheno after his stint in Sisters of mercy?

kevin coburg, germany
The Specials were undoubtedly one of the greatest bands EVER but nothing short of the original line-up would do the name justice. I would love to see The Bridewell Taxis live: their single "Give in" is one of the best songs I've ever heard, an eclectic masterpiece, without wanting to sound like an utter ponce. Anybody remember Diesel Park West? Not truly indie (but, then again, nor are the Specials)but "Shakespeare Alabama" is a cracking album.

Dave
How true is the Easterhouse story?

Sam, Maidstone
Thompson Twins for me. Very underrated. Some great songs from the early post punk days through the synth years up to the dance pop final moments - including a great final album in 1991 that never saw the light of day over here in the UK. Its time they came back.

Dave Huddersfield
What about the Bachelor Pad? Melody, fuzz & psychedelia. And about 1 album & a couple of singles. Better than the Beatles, the Stones and the Who combined. They never played Leeds either. Totally brilliant.

Chris - Manchester
Theatre of Hate - The Original Radiohead/Queens Of the Stone Age.

Jules - Leeds
John mentioned Spear Of Destiny - they have to be the best live band that I have seen ever, and I have seen some really good live bands. Kirk Brandon is poised to release the tenth studio album from Spear Of Destiny later this month, entitled Loadestone. I have had a pre-release copy for a year or so now and I have to say it is by far the greatest thing that Kirk has written and recorded. Not only are they about to release the album, but have a mini-tour planned also to coincide. Check out www.kirkbrandon.com for details - you won't regret it.

John, Stockport
All these comments about Rainmakers make me think of Spear of Destiny, but they already back together gigging currently! No-one seems to have mentioned Magazine yet, or even better Howard Devoto and Pete Shelly. And what about Wah! or Echo and the Bunnymen?

Derek, Bridgend
None. They were all shite which is why they were indie. THEY COULDN'T GET SIGNED BY A MAJOR.

ray from stockport
big black, so they can do their terrific cover of "the model" at manchester apollo for my forty first birthday.

Come back Mark!
RIDE would definitely be welcome back...

Sarah / Wandsworth
what do you mean we don't want The Jesus and Mary Chain to return?

Dave, Leeds
Would love to see Japan reform (under the proper name!) and tour again. Very much doubt if David Sylvian would be up for that one though, I gather he's a spiritualist recluse living in America now!

Jonathan, Lewes
King Swamp, somebody else out there knows this group! For all of you out there, get a copy of either of their albums, King Swamp and Wiseblood. Still sends shivers down the spine. My other votes would go to The Adventures (Ireland) or Noiseworks (Australia) I can dream............

Jon, York
Lots of votes for Cud which is fantastic. Saw them supported by The Family Cat and that was a scorcher of a gig. Both these two to reform then. Simple - and a top night and collection of records guaranteed.

Dave, Huddersfield
Would be great to see the quirky and inimatable Stump back promoting a rerelease of fierce Pancake CD. They were around to briefly to be fully appreciate first time round, have been overlooked and had albums out of print for too long.

Leicester
What about The Swinging Laurels, especially as founder member John Barrow has a great book out and a new website

Graeme Alloa
I would love to see The March Violets reform.I hear Tom Ashton has a new band on the go in the USA.

Fifi, Liverpool
Not forgetting the criminally ignored Walking Seeds! That drummer really was a little cracker - you can keep the rest of 'em though, bunch o'booze hounds!

Jools, Saff O' The Border
No mention of the Inspiral Carpets??? Well, at least they tried eh? And Clint Boon is still God, even without the dodgy bowl cut hairdo...

hodges manchester
easterhouse , are back better than ever ,david verner ,andy perry , have secretley , working together , verner ,has been working for ,badlydrawnboy, with andy rourke , david verner ,andy perry , andy rourk ,mike murry , are now the new line up for easterhouse , rourke ,and verner are grt rythem section ,combined with andy perry ,lyrical and vocal abillity , this should a band to look out for .

lee , Hemel
Mark, Senser have been back with Hiethem (somfink like dat) for at least a couple of years now. Released CD in 2003 (Schematic) & it kicks butt! He & Kerstin still railing against injustice & stuff. New CD due this year. Have been doing Feb gigs in Belgium for some reason

pete burdon, hull.
poors of reign, fall classic line up, distractions.

Robert, London
I still have my 1994 Cud tour T-shirt. Cud supported by the Bridewell Taxis.

Mark, Hartlepool
Yeah good idea poppies getting back together they were class, how about senser getting there original singer back and touring again cos they were great in the 90's also bring back G.B.O.A. (Gaye Bikers On Acid)

Scott Dogg, Manchester
Bill Drummond should stop all this art nonsense and bring back the mighty, the only, the wonderful KLF!

George, Sacramento
Love to see Adam Ant do another round... What ever happened with his little "run in" with the law?

Dave (Swindon)
(Adding to Lee in Hemel's response): There are actually 5 Rainmakers albums (3 from the 80s and 2 from the mid-90s when they reformed - all fantastic). Bob W also resurfaced with a solo album last year... All recommended.

Derek, Leeds.
I certainly think a reformed Poors of Reign would rock, where are they now?

Shif, Tel Aviv
The less glamorous the bands where when they where young, and the more there music was geniuses, the better chance seeing and hearing them again would be satisfying. My choice: Cocteau Twins. I hope they'll decide to make a European tour in addition to the 1 time concert they're having in California.

Mandy of Coventry
please do your best to get KING to reform...surely the second best band ever to come out of Coventry (after The Specials). They were one step away from worldwide greatness when they disbanded. Paul King presents some dodgy satellite music channel now so is obviously still keen to be in the limelight....

CLIVE LEICESTER
IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN ALTHOUGH THERE WOULD BE £MILLIONS ON THE TABLE - HAS TO BE THE SMITHS....ALSO IT WOULD BE GREAT TO GET A TALK TALK ALBUM / TOUR

Clive in Leicester
The Darling Buds should be included in this debate, whilst never 'mainstream underground' they deserve a mention & produced some very memorable tracks

Pete, Camden
I think the original Big Audio Dynamite should reform... Mick Jones (now playing with Tony James in Carbon/Silicon) should get back togethar with Don Letts, Leo Williams and Greg Roberts. Just to hear Contact or V-Thirteen again would be pure brilliance

Tom Brodrick, Hemel Hempstead
Please please please let me get wat I want - reform The Smiths!

Dylan, Newcastle Pon Tyne
It has to be the Specials.

donald sopel banff scotland
how about the original omd one of the great bands especially the early years thats the band i would love to see reform they were class

Paul in Fife
I'm with Mark on the fabulously underrated Popguns. I'd love to see 1000 Violins just one more time but Dave of the band sadly passed away.

Sarah, Edinburgh
Cocteau Twins

Dan Aykroyd, Chicago.
Oh that's easy - The Mission. Original line up. Adams, Brown, Hinkler and Hussey - one mind blowing gig of Mission material from 85 - 1990. Would be far far far too much fun...

Anna, Poland
I'm going for the sympathy vote here and suggesting Dead or Alive - Pete Burns is just begging to be noticed (check out the bad plastic surgery websites if you don't believe me).

Gerard, New Jersey
Bands (who have split up for some time) should not reform at all! Reforming discredits their music and reduces it from art to mere novelty and commercialism. Bands only last as long as they are ripe. Once they go rotten, its best not to bring them back from the dead. The Police did it right. They quit before their work went sour and have left their back catalogue to speak for itself. Now if only Sting would do the same... Your next debate question should be...which bands have soured (or are starting to) and should go their separate ways? Radiohead, anyone?

Simo / Newcastle
These bands should reform, because they were excellent live. CUD, The Mighty Lemon Drops and Kitchens Of Distinction.

Jay Gordon/New York, New York
Missing Persons epitomized the 80's new wave scene. They defined early 80's "art rock" with "Destination Unknown" "Words" "Mental Hopskotch" "Walking in LA". Their sophisticated music coupled with Dale Bozzio's, the group's lead singer, sex appeal captapulted the band. Dale looked like a piece of cotton candy with her hair the color of a rainbow and often wearing plastic in random places. The band had talent as well. Terry Bozzio has to be one of the best drummers in the world. I was luck enough to travel 3000 miles to see Warren Cuccurrullo, Dale Bozzio, and Terry Bozzio reunite and play in LA ... But only too briefly...

james, birmingham
Was the Poppies - Brilliant. But then Saw Voice of the Beehive supporting the Wonderstuff last year and if that wasn't an advert for not reforming I don't know what was! What we need is Carter USM back - sorely missed. I keep hear rumours of the return of the Psychedelic Furs but nothing seems to happen, and Japan's return would not go amiss either. And I know there is a version of the Undertone's back but That Petrol Emotion should never have disappeared in the first place.

parkaman, ireland
my bloody valentine - after big kevs work on the lost in translation soundtrack and loveless finally been hailed as the masterpiece it is i think we all deserve to have another ear bleading live session from the valentines. bring it on!

Rafael / Brasilia
If I could "demand" a band to reform, it would be undoubtly The Smiths. The best lyricist and the best guitar player of the 80's. But I'd just like to say that The Smiths never ended because they live in every fan's heart like an eternal flame. Morrissey's originality still rings on.

Mark S Doherty, Derry
Madness are just about the best that ever did reform. But, I would love to see Microdisney get back together. Oh, what fun we would have!

Lexie, Mitcham
Tracey was no sort of star! GET A GRIP! She was blonde ... that was IT. NOTHING good to say, NOTHING important, couldn't sing for fudge nor money ... very glad she disappeared. PLEASE don't mention her again! Reform? I was just thinking how great it would be to ask some tall hunky guy if I could sit on his shoulders! Take me back! Crazyhead, Gaye Bykers on Acid, (New Model Army still play so I can't mention them) and Poppies already did a fab gig! BUT bring back GREBO. It was the mother of GRUNGE after all ... and maybe I could sit on shoulders and shake my hair about again ... *sighs*

Martin, Glasgow
My nomination is for Kevin Shields to stop hiding behind Primal Scream, and reform the mighty My Bloody Valentine. Come on Kev give us a tune!

Casey, Madrid
Bow Wow Wow are currently touring the States - or so it seems. Not sure if anyone wanting to see them again would do so for musical reasons though (and that includes myself).

Andy, Nottingham
Sorry Mark, but The Primitives can stay where they are - nowhere. They were and remain one of the worst live bands I've ever seen, and I've seen a few! Sorry for those of you who want The Chameleons to reform but there's more chance of hell freezing over - they've tried it once and the differences that drove them apart in the first place resurfaced with bells on second time around. I always wondered what happened to Wendy Morgan - used to have a bit of a thing about her if truth were known (but don't tell the wife!)

Amsterdam
Talk Talk would be a good one. Where IS Mark Hollis by the way? He made one brilliant solo album, almost chambermusic, I thought. But every Talk Talk album was better then the previous one but also probably sold less then the previous one.

Ian, York
Perhaps these bands could save Glastonbury... Rain Parade, Felt, Beloved, Redskins, Easterhouse, Specials, Cud, Pours of Reign, House of Love, House of Love, Housemartins, The Shop Assistants, Man from Delmonte, Cocteau Twins, Flowerpot Men, Half Man Half Biscuit, Jazz Butcher...

Sean, Derby
Leyton Buzzards reformation !!!

Ian, York
Talk Talk should get back together and then kill off Keane for stealing their back catolgue.

Sheila Vanloo. St. Austell .Cornwall
Have to agree wholeheartedly that The Jam would be a brilliant comeback band, but only if Weller forgot the rubbish that the Style Council churned out and returned to original ethos of The Jam at their best. I would love to see PIL reform - what a band they were.

Duncan, London
Guy Chambers and Terry Bickers would be a pretty poor House Of Love, and may upset Guy Chadwick the genius behind HOL. 80s bands to reform - we've had the Pixies so no one else can compare

Dave Madistone
There is only one choice for me, Squeeze....near the end 93-95 they released two of their best albums ever in Some Fantastic Place and Ridiculous...and they are awesome live, as anyone who has recently seen Glenn tilbrook live will know......and it is a reunion that could happen.....

Tom Manchester
reform the New FADS !!!!

Dave, Warrington
The original Oasis, with Guigsy, Bonehead and McCarroll!!!!! Just for one gig.

Wavey Dave, Sheffield
Get Dave Lee Roth era Van Halen back together for the reunion tour to end all reunion tours.. striding Collossus style across the globe. (God I'm old - nurse! the screens!)

lee, Hemel
Oh Yes! Dave, The Rainmakers were superb Bob W sure had a way with words. I have 4 albums by them, the last being a live one. Was there anything else? What's he n the boys doing now? The Primitives yeah, my covers band (A.M.O.S.) are doing Crash. Shame you live in Swindon Dave, we also do Understanding Jane! Yeah, bring back Kingmaker & all hail House Of Love

Mark H. NY, USA.
Yeah, Yeah, No The Very Things/Cravats/DCL Locomotive The original My Bloody Valentine the Purple Things

Simon, Dorking
The Smiths, timeless band, 5 years not enough (especially if you got into them in 1987), no it wouldn't be the same but 1 or 2 great new songs and performances... priceless. (And not completely 100%impossible judging by Marr's recent interview on Front Row.) Bob? Why not! Yes to Talking Heads and Felt. How about 10,000 Maniacs and The Woodentops. Or an obscure band called Pacific who made 2 of my favourite songs ever - the only 2 songs of theirs I ever heard. Smiths - just do it.

Zuz Quintero, Mexico City
It'll be great to see Rip Rig + Panic again on this planet. I'm looking for "God" album since 20 years...

dug. glasgow.
2unlimited... or ride... ??

pol x ......people's republic of yorkshire.
Age of Chance! nice one,, but you'd have to persuade the guitarist to forsake a burgeioning carreer in a charity shop in Whetherby. Bring Back the boo

Mark, Exeter
It can never be the Smiths as they could never have that impact again. Don't laugh but The Police could be interesting if they reformed. It might stop Sting turning into Phil Collins, if it's not too late already.

Jason Bromsgrove, Worcs.
King Swamp and the mighty, mighty, Wang Chung. No I'm being serious!

Tim. Hove.
Give me the return of Paisley's purveyors of perfect pop, The Close Lobsters any day! Or even Bob. Anyone remember them?

Jon in York
Really, its got to be Husker Du. Bob Mould hasn't done anything worthwhile for ages (Sugar? I don't think so. Be honest - Copper Blue sounds like the Pixies, Beaster is not that good a record, and File Under Easy Listening is pants) and Grant Hart seems to be in semi-retirement, despite four top notch (two solo, two Nova Mob) records, although the production isn't up to much.

Stuart in Newport
To Laura from Bristol, You'll need to find someone to raise Billy Mckenzie from the dead to reform the Associates. How about John Foxx era ULtravox to reform.

Vivienne, Glasgow
I'd like to see Cud, the Chameleons, the Man From Delmonte, Easterhouse, Bow Wow Wow, T'Chala Grid and Getting the Fear. Would n't that be a great line-up for the Gig on the Green this Summer? The whole thing would probably have to be done with lots of dry ice and you'd have to squint a bit so that it would n't be too scary.

manc
the chameleons

Pete Green, Sheffield
I'm sick of bands reforming. Reforming is for prog rock dinosaurs, not fizzy indie guitar pop heroes. I loved the Weddoes and the Stuffies but I don't want to see them 15 years later. They should all get office jobs and leave the stage clear for new talent.

DevoT
OMD and Talk Talk please

Casey (presently in Madrid)
Well, even though I think there's nothing like the first time, if I can make a modest contribution: as I missed them live during their hey-days, how about Talking Heads doing a bit of a tour? Apart from that, it would be curious to see Young Marble Giants as well. If The White Stripes can pull it off, they should give it a go too.

Adrian in Bristol.
How about The Monochrome Set(ok late 70s/early80s but one of THE MOST underated bands ever. Please 6Music, use all your power to bring em back-or at least tell me where I can get a copy of "volume, contrast and brilliance."

Laura Nesbitt, Bristol
What a great debate! Clearly my number one choice would be The Smiths, although as you say it is highly unlikey... and would you really? It might not work and then would dash memories (is it better to burn out or to fade away?) and ruin what they were... I feel like a child in a sweet shop! I'd love the Associates to reunite, if only to play my favourite song Never Never live. What about Heaven 17, Blancmange, The Thompson Twins, Visage.... oh you cruel, cruel 6 Music, why do you tease us so!!

Phil- Birkenhead
Please don't utter the name Pop Will Eat Itself and the go on to berate Morrissey. Best memory of PWEI ? Getting coined off by Public Enemy Fans when they tried their hand on the Def Jam tour!

Dave (Swindon)
the Icicle Works?? Saw them at the Town and Country Club (around 1987) - absolutely fantastic. Although Ian McNabb's solo stuff was also brilliant I didn't think it had quite the same energy. the Rainmakers - I thought Bob Walkenhorst was a fantastic songwriter but very few other people seem to have heard of them :-(

Carmarthen
There's something about not visiting the same river twice, as you are not the same and neither is the river. *o's bands are happy memories - we've had to move on and so should they. There was nothing more tragic than the reformed Velvet Underground (not 80's I know)

louise, suffolk
Oi mark, another dig at mozzer? you seem to sneak one at every availiable oppurtunity...in fact, its as though you really don't like him or something...

Dave Turner in San Francisco
A few more to add to your list: 1. The Boomtown Rats as long as Geldolf doesn't wear the sweatshirt from the "In the Long Grass" album. It makes him look too much like Belinda Carlysle from the "Head Over Heels" video. 2. Sparks. Humor is missing in most music today and after Prince Harry's lousy attempt at a nazi fancy dress costume, isn't the world ready to re-embrace Ron Mael? 3. Rank and File. Sure it's country, but back in the day it was refreshing. 4. Angellic Upstarts.Anti Flag just doesn't cut it for political punk. They're too damn young and/or spoiled. I'd say Bauhaus as well, but after seeing them on their Resurrection tour in 1998 ( I think ) it just really showed they were in it for the money. Not that anyone that reforms isn't, but at least learn to fake sincerity better.

Mathew, Boston USA (via North Wales)
I'd like to see (hear?) Kingmaker reform, and not be torn apart by the press this time round.
