And who can blame them? After all, Kurt Cobain did not make his dramatic wheelchair entrance at Leeds festival, nor did The Stone Roses implode spectacularly on stage in the north, nor did The Foo Fighters’ debut UK show almost bring the tent down somewhere in Yorkshire. Even when it all goes wrong – as with last year’s unceremonious bottling of 50 Cent and The Rasmus – it has a tendency to go right, with Green Day saving the day with perhaps the greatest festival gig in the world… ever! History, then, is on Reading’s side – especially in the year that Iron Maiden make a triumphant return to a festival they last played in 1982. But as the bills are generally the same on both sites (although Leeds alone got Guns N’Roses in 2002 – swindle!), there’s more to a great festival than that. What about the fans? Northern crowds are generally thought to be more enthusiastic than those in the south – or are southern audiences just more discerning? Then there’s the site – can a car park in the commuter belt still compare to the horsy beauty of Bramham Park? For some of us, well, yes it can and it always will. But where do you stand on rock’s great north/south divide?
