Matt's Biography
Matt was born in 1972 just outside Birmingham. 'Mama Weer All Crazee Now' by Slade was number one in the charts which he's always thought was rather fortuitous, and after watching Queen's ‘Rock In Rio’ video, decided that music was the way forward (as were twelve minute timpani solos).

Following considerable time spent hanging around in Camden in the mid '90s, he ended up drumming for Menswear - a third division Britpop band of no fixed ability - which paid the bills until a chronic lack of ability caught up with them.

After a stint in a group called Montrose Avenue - who pioneered the UK West Coast County Rock revival that's yet to happen - he became a music journalist writing for various publications before joining the world of radio at London indie station Xfm.

All of which was just a rehearsal for co-presenting the Music Week on 6 Music, where he now resides, toiling at the rock face of Music News secured only by the crampons of truth.

1. First record you ever bought:

I'd love to say it was something unbearable cool like The Queen Is Dead by The Smiths or True Stories by Talking Heads, by the reality was far less palatable. On my 12th birthday I got £15 in Boots tokens from my Nan and promptly bought Blue Jean by David Bowie and Passengers by Elton John (for some ungodly reason) on 7inch and Complete Madness and Business As Usual by Men at Work on cassette. I still listen to one of those purchases.

2. Best gig?

As memorable as Twisted Sister's 'Come Out And Play' 1986 tour was, I'd have to say Nirvana at the Birmingham Hummingbird in 1991, Radiohead at Le Zenith in Paris in 1997 or Kings Of Leon at the 100 Club, London in 2007.

3. Six records you couldn't live without

Everything In Its Right Place - Radiohead
Train In Vain - The Clash
Hymn To Freedom - Oscar Peterson Trio
Everlong -Foo Fighters
Mellow Doubt - Teenage Fanclub
Black Book - Blur

4. First record you ever played on the radio?

Coldplay - The Scientist.

5. A record that makes you laugh?

Business Time by Flight Of The Conchords or Jenny And The S Dog by Steven Malkmus

6. A record that sounds better in the dark?

Feel Flows by The Beach Boys

7. A song you wish you'd written?

I'm In Love With A Girl - Big Starr
