With so many AMAZING entries coming in to the competition, we felt like we should give out some 'highly commended' prizes too. So, in no particular order, here are the videos that almost made it...

The Emmett Family The Emmett Family

Adam: The idea of this family coming together to make a video for a song about meatballs was so heartwarming in itself that all the invention and hard work that went into it was icing on the meatballs. The fact that all the labels on the cans in the fridge had been specially made impressed us all very deeply and it was a fantastic performance from probably the youngest person to feature in the competition! Great effects too. This was a very hot contender indeed.

Joe: As if the Von Trapp family have entered Video Wars. Great mixed media effects work, judiciously applied video morphing, carefully crafted wipes and great practical props. Lovely kitchen. Adorable and talented young stars. Terrific attention to detail, especially the non-copyright infringing packaging designs. No less than anyone would expect from the the world's number one Austrian singing family.

Garth: What the Osmonds are to pop, the Emmetts are to home movies.

Adam and Joe Ali McKernan

Adam: This was so good and so insane that I wondered for a while if it had been made prior to the competition and simply recut to fit the song, but then I realised I was insane and was forced to bow to the awesome creative power of this film-making team. I’d be very interested to see what else they end up making. Nice credits that are much longer than the actual pop vid too!

Joe: One of my favourites. Astonishing in-camera animation inventiveness. Possibly made by Michel Gondry's extended family. A clever new technique in every shot. Amazing cardboard wrangling skills. A great melancholic re-working of the title song over the beautifully executed end credits. I particularly like the fact that the end credits are quite a bit longer than the main feature.

Garth: This is such a hugely ambitious film. These people are clearly really talented, really friendly and really mad.

Adam Buxton Bill Edwards

Adam:
Once I’d got over a few vanity issues (I am NOT a furious gnome! Am I...?) I was very impressed by this. Great details (nice Dune reference!) and certainly one of the best pieces of animation we saw. Excellent work Mr Edwards.

Joe: This one is fantastic. A very inventive interpretation of the song. Bill is clearly a very talented illustrator and animator with a touch of the brilliance of Ronald Searle. I can't speculate on how accurate a depiction of Adam's life during the first round of Song Wars this is, but I'd imagine it's about right. I found the newspaper headline reading 'Cornish is best human ever' a particularly clever and perceptive touch.

Garth: This animation is terrific. Having known Adam for many years now I can say he has been captured perfectly in this animation.

Have your say
Stuart Lanceley Stuart Lanceley

Adam:
I absolutely love this. As a No Surprises pastiche it’s just superb (love the faithfully recreated light reflections added in post!) but the meatballs element takes the whole thing to an even more wonderful place. A place with no war, no hate and no Jessica Alba. This was a hot contender for winner in my book.

Joe: Easily the best single-take entry we got, Stuart's life-threateningly accurate Radiohead pastiche goes further than Thom Yorke ever dared imagine. Aside from how brilliantly Stuart has copied the Radiohead video, he must be commended for the sheer danger he puts himself in. One meatball aggressively attempts to go up his nose, while others hammer at his actual eyeballs. Stuart then has to go without breathing for the duration of my prolonged and incredibly stupid chorus warbling. And after all that, he still manages to lip-synch the final words with dead-on precision. A remarkable achievement.

Garth: A sweet slice of genius pie. Stuart deserves some kind of knighthood for making such a brilliant pastiche.
