Gruff Rhys picked up the first ever Welsh Music Prize on Friday 21 October.

Hotel Shampoo is Gruff's third solo album and recounts his experiences on the road since he first started touring with Super Furry Animals in 1996. An art installation featuring all the freebies he has collected in hotels over the last 15 years opened in Cardiff to coincide with the album release earlier this year.

The Welsh Music prize is the brainchild of Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens and his friend and local live music promoter, John Rostron.

Guardian music critic Jude Rodgers, Radio Wales DJ Bethan Elfyn, David Exley from the Coda Agency and Ashli Todd from Spillers Records were among the 10 judges, who were of both Welsh and English origin.

They had to choose a winner out of 12 nominated acts from a wide range of musical genres including folk, emo, rock, dubstep and electro.
