The Old Grey Whistle Test will mark its 40th Anniversary next week with a new sixteen-part series of shows on Radio 2, hosted by Bob Harris.

The free spirited show which ran for 16 years until 1987 brought David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen and Elton John to the front rooms of the public as they played live in a stripped down setting.

Each week will see a selection of archive performances alongside new interviews with artists that appeared on the original show and exclusive studio sessions recorded specifically for this series.

The show also includes a rarely heard archive performance of David Bowie along with brand new session recordings from Squeeze, who originally performed back in 1979 with Jools Holland.

6 Music's Adrian Larkin went along to Maida Vale to grab a sneak preview:

Amazing that 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' was THE music show back in the day, it will be great to hear what was great music back then...
