Ivor Novello Nominations

Artists hopeful for much sought after award

The nominations for this year's Ivor Novello Awards have been announced and Everything Everything and Plan B have both recieved two nominations.

Other acts on the diverse list of nominations include Foals, The xx, Tiny Tempah, Bombay Bicycle Club and Villagers.

An Ivor Novello award is much sought after by songwriters because nominees are chosen by a panel of professional songwriters. Villagers' songwriter Conor O'Brien explained why this nomination was such an honour. "It means a lot.", he said.

"To be voted for by your peers, the people who do the same thing you do, and they're admiring you for the way you do it, it’s amazing."

Villagers were nominated in the Best Song Musically and Lyrically category for their track, Becoming a Jackal. They'll be up against Everything Everthing and Foals. None of the tracks in this category made the UK Top 40, proving the Ivor Novello Award's commitment to song writing talent over commercial viability.

Conor explained what Becoming A Jackal was all about: "I guess it's about losing innocence, about leaving behind an idyllic childhood and walking into the world of the scavenging jackals. It’s sort of a zombie tale.", he said.

"I had a very specific idea of being in a room overlooking a balcony and seeing a square down below and watching lots of scavenging beast ripping apart bodies. It was gruesome. But, I’d tried to make something beautiful out of such a cynical vision. It was dream-like; everything was the colour of wine."

Conor also explained how the song came together: "I put a lot of effort into the lyrics, especially in this song. – It is quite an imagery led song. I had a visual idea for it long before I knew what it was going to be about.

"I’d drawn a picture first before I wrote the song. I was reading a lot of Herman Hesse at the time and I was really obsessed by narcissist By Caravaggio."
